Are you ready for the move to off campus life? One of the most important things to know is YOUR RIGHTS. Having friends over, roommates that may possess illegal substances, parties, parking, etc. These are all legal issues that could greatly effect you and your future. How to share the chores is another part of the growing process that the college years are all about.
1. Know your roommates. If they tend to get stinking drunk, don’t let them near the door during party time. Any law enforcement official will need a warrant to enter your premises, UNLESS someone lets them in the door!! Typically, official personel can issue citations for loud/disorderly conduct. These are just fines. They are a pain, but hopefully, that will be the worse you ever encounter.
2. Keep your important things safe. The most important item you may have is a vehicle(if you are fortunate enough to have one at school). If there is limited parking near your housing, find a safe guaranteed alternative, or leave the car home! You can’t imagine home much money you can waste on parking fines whe you are tired, drunk, cold, and don’t want to find a legal parking spot. Ignoring the parking tickets could get you “The Boot” or Towed, and both will be way more painful and costly.
3. Do more than your fair share of the work in the house. Even if there is a “work chart” for household chores, do yours plus. There will be times when every roommate in the house feels as if they are doing more than the fair share, just expect that to be the norm.

4. Food and Cooking could be the toughest call when living together for the college years. Who bought what, how much each person ate. Do your personal best once again, to buy more than you eat and let the little stuff go. Of course, having enough money to last throughout the semester is essential.
All information contained herein has been gleaned over 4 years of communal living of many different types. The real important lesson is to stay safe, in and out of your ‘home” and try to share nicely. And you may want to google the city ordinances concerning noise levels when you first move in!!
