When a neighborhood hangout goes exclusive.

What happens when a neighborhood restaurant gets a good review? Outsiders start showing up. Isn’t that the purpose of good press? In the case of Annabel Lee tavern, we heard good things: innovative food offerings, friendly hangout, relaxed atmosphere. Name is from Edgar Allen Poe and many a tribute to him on the walls.

Here is a list of the top web sites offering information on all things collegiate. These sites will have all the resources you could want, short of an actual visit to campus. You can get a sense of the culture of an institution when you browse these sites.

1. Collegetoolkit.com: primarily used by high schoolers to get information on financial aid and academic rigors of a school.

Assist students and parents in making choices and finding colleges that fit your profile.

  • Pros: numerous search methods depending on main criteria for college: ie: cost, location, degree of difficulty,

  • Cons: lots of facts, not much insight.

Students: dump the coupons and discover your college town. The coupon sites are fine for a quick fast food fix, but if you want to lose the freshman 15, and meet and greet around your campus, try finding the hidden gems around your school.

Flyers are all around the campus and in dorm rooms and off campus apartments, but resist the urge and find the diamond in the rough spot for great food.

Here is a list of great spots around Johns Hopkins University:

Brewer’s Art: Hopping spot in the City

It’s 7:30 PM, Thursday night and the crowd is 3 deep at Brewer’s Art bar. This crowd is not here for the food, which is excellent, but for the drinks and mingling. Mostly the drink of choice is beer. The menu has 8 pages of unique and home brewed draft. Wander further into the next room and sofa’s and small cocktail tables are overflowing with more patrons drinking and eating lite fare: burgers and rosemary fries.

Finally, the main seating area is 3/4 full. Linen table cloths adorn the tables, and the diners are all buzzing with conversation and food.

We began with shrimp and grits. The taste was full and flavorful. The shrimp still had the heads on and that was a bit creepy, but taste was delectable.

Secret Language of Cocktails

Your cocktail says something about you.

For instance, ordering a martini says you appreciate the finer things in life, ordering a gin and tonic says you appreciate the simple things in life, and ordering a boilermaker says you appreciate knowing where your pants are. But mixed drinks go deeper than that, much deeper. When you sidle up to the bar and place your order, you open a window onto your very soul, revealing not only who you are, but also who you long to be. So know your cocktails and order with care, or you might send the wrong message.
